English placement test

Before an IELTS, TOEFL or PTE Academic course there are two questions worth answering: which level to start at, and which of the three tests actually suits you. A placement test answers both in about forty minutes, and it is free.

What it covers

  • Reading: two short academic passages with comprehension and inference questions.
  • Listening: one lecture extract and one conversation, played once.
  • Grammar and usage: the structures the three tests keep returning to.
  • Writing: one short task, marked by a teacher rather than automatically.
  • A ten-minute spoken section over video, so speaking is assessed by a person.

What you get back

A written summary with an approximate CEFR level per skill, the level of group course to start at, and a recommendation between IELTS, TOEFL and PTE Academic based on what your results actually show rather than on which course we would rather sell you.

That last part matters more than it sounds. The three tests reward different things: IELTS is marked by people against published descriptors, PTE Academic is machine-scored and rewards fluency measured against a model, and the TOEFL leans on integrated tasks and note-taking. Someone whose speaking is accurate but hesitant often does better on IELTS than on PTE, and the placement test is where that shows up.

It is not a prediction of your score on the real test, and we will not give you one. It is a starting point.

Booking one

The spoken section needs a teacher on the other end, so the test is scheduled rather than self-serve. Message us with a couple of times that suit you and we will confirm one.
